The New York Chapter of the Hispanic Dental Association (NYHDA) is an incorporated nonprofit under the laws of the state of New York, and has been working to promote the oral health of the Hispanic community, and other underserved communities, across the state and beyond our borders. These efforts made over the years have been a joint effort between the leadership team of the NYHDA, our interprofessional network of volunteers and the community stakeholders.
The NYHDA chapter has been growing continuously since its inception in 2010. Membership has been increasing via social events, sponsoring enriching continuing education courses, dental outreach and activities throughout the city and abroad. There has been increased visibility via social media which has led to continuous increases in corporate sponsorship. The chapter has also Initiated and participated in dental humanitarian service projects to treat the underserved in the Dominican Republic.
Most of the local outreach activities have taken place in Hispanic neighborhoods in the five boroughs of New York City, areas in particular need of dental treatment and education. The chapter has presented in public schools and daycare centers to parents and caregivers. NYHDA attends the GNYDM annually with its booth, and in hosting the National HDA. The chapter also attends and participates in the National Hispanic Medical Association. The chapter also honored Dr. Chad Gehani, new ADA president 2019-2020, at the CONAOD Dental Meeting in the Dominican Republic in October, 2019. Finally, several of our board members are actively involved in the legislative aspect of the profession as delegates to a number of committees statewide.

The Hispanic Dental Association Mission states “We are the leaders for Hispanics Oral Health providing Service,Education,Advocacy and Leadership”. The Hispanic Dental Association’s vision states “The elimination of Oral Health disparities in Hispanic communities.”
Dr. Amarilis Jacobo is a General Dentist in a private practice. She received her Dental training at the University of Central East, San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, and posteriorly a post-graduate training from New York University. Dr Jacobo is Pass President of the National Hispanic Dental Association, Bronx County Dental Society and the Dominican Dental Association. Currently Dr. Jacobo is Delegate of the American Dental Association, and under the New York State Dental Association she has several appointments as member of the House of Delegates, Ethic Committee, Empire Dental Political Action Committee, and the Medicaid Reference Committee.
Dr. Jacobo is one of the most respected leaders in the Hispanic Dental community, very committed on doing community services and bringing the annual Dr. Amarilis Jacobo award for the high schools students that fit the criteria of valedictorian, leadership, community service. Her influence extends to many other ethnic groups within Dentistry, and works tirelessly to promote organize Dentistry and the profession as a whole, being extremely loyal to the ADA, NYHDA and NYSDA. She is the chair of the Pierre Fauchard Academy New York Chapter, and has few fellowships at the International College of Dentists, American College of Dentistry, Pierre Fauchard Academy and Alumni of the American Dental Association Leadership institute. Currently Dr. Jacobo is board member New York Chapter at the Hispanic dental Association.
Dr. Mota-Martinez completed her undergraduate education and received her dental degree in her native Dominican Republic, at the Universidad Central del Este in San Pedro de Macoris. Upon her arrival in the United States, Dr. Mota-Martinez received her Doctor of Dental Surgery certification from the New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Mota-Martinez continued her post-graduate training in Periodontics, Orthodontics, and Implant Dentistry and has received post-graduate certification in all of these branches of dentistry. Upon completing her training, Dr. Mota-Martinez established her private practice in Corona, where she has provided quality dental care and cultivated deep community bonds for more than 20 years. Dr. Mota-Martinez’s involvement in organized dentistry spreads well beyond the office in Corona having served in numerous leadership roles at the local, state and national level. Dr. Mota-Martinez is an active member of the New York City Chapter of the HAD (NYHDA), she has served as President of the Queens County Dental Society and is a member in good standing of the New York State Dental Society, The American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Dominican Dental Association, the Puerto Rican Dental Association and the Spanish American Medical Dental Society of New York, Inc.
Dr. Rodriguez graduated with her dental degree from New York University College of Dentistry in 1995. She attended NYU as an advanced student, having graduated with a Doctor in Dental Surgery degree from Universidad Central del Este in the Dominican Republic. She also received endodontic training at Universidad Pedro Henriquez Ureña in the Dominican Republic. In 2012, Dr. Rodriguez was the poster face of Colgate at the Multi-Cultural Oral Health Summit in Boca Raton, Florida. This was a joint convention of the Hispanic Dental Association, National Dental Association, and Society of American Indian Dentist. Dr. Rodriguez has been involved in Organized Dentistry for several years, including as past national trustee at the Hispanic Dental Association, Past President at the New York Chapter of the Hispanic Dental Association (NYHDA), Member of the Advisory Board at Hostos Community College in the Bronx, and active member of several organizations, as the Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, Bronx County Dental Society, Dominican Dental Association, SAMDESNY, National Dental Association, National Association of Women Dentist, and the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives. Dr. Rodriguez currently is one of the leaders of the Mission of Mercy to DR, and Founder of the Hope Award Scholarship at Hostos Community College and HDA Foundation.
Dr. Hanette Gomez was born in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic. She studied Dentistry at Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo and graduated in 1984. She then came to New York and attended New York University where she obtained her DDS Degree and became licensed in 1990. Since then she has been in private practice in Corona, New York. Dr. Gomez has received a Fellowship in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and a Recognition Award from the New York City Medical Examiner Office for her volunteer service as part of the ID Team that worked on identifying victims of September 11th and the American Airlines flight 587 to Dominican Republic that had departed from John F. Kennedy Airport and crashed. Dr. Gomez currently is the president at the Dominican Dental Association.
Dr. Aguirre was born and raised in Colombia, South America, and earned dental degrees from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and the University of Pennsylvania PASS program followed by an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Columbia University. Dr. Aguirre has worked in private practice, community health centers, and academia. She currently holds a full time appointment as an Assistant Professor of Dental Medicine in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry within the Section of Growth and Development at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Aguirre’s involvement in organized dentistry includes the ADA, HDA, and ADEA. She completed the 2016-17 ADA’s Institute for Diversity in Leadership Program; she is a former President of the NYHDA and currently serves as the chair of the Membership Committee and as a member of the Service Committee at the national level. As a proud member of the National Health Service Corps, Dr. Aguirre is committed to helping the underserved. Her passion is service and education.
Dr. Arelys Santana received her Doctor of Dental Surgery certification from the New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Arelys Sanatana continued her post-graduate training by completing a GPR residency at Brooklyn’s Woodhull Hopital. After completing her training, Dr. Arelys Santana established her private practice in the heart of Jackson Heights, where she provided quality dental care for more than 20 years.
Dr Pimentel obtained her Doctoral Degree in Dentistry from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo UASD at the Dominican Republic. Dr Pimentel practiced general dentistry for several years, until she and her family moved to the United States. Dr. Pimentel received her Dental Hygienist Degree from Hostos Community College and has been practicing as RDH since 2017 in a private practice in Manhattan.
